Zaratan in thrilled to present the final exhibition of the experimental laboratory EM OBRAS, which occurred during 13 days and counted with the participation of CAROLINA SERRANITO, CLARA JOST, ELISABETE GONÇALVES, FEDERICA ELENA, INÊS OLIVEIRA, JOANA CRUZ, JOÃO COIMBRA, LINA ALVES, MALU MARTINS and SARA AL ATROUNI.
Detached from traditional teaching methods, the laboratory emphasized practice, improvisation, debate and collaboration. Discussion of artworks, its formal qualities, its environment, the meaning it creates, the work of the artist and the viewer – all these have educational features and are examples of Zaratan's curatorial approach. The aim is not just to organize the exchange of knowledge, but first of all, to create discursive spaces: an open context for the existence of contemporary artistic practice.
The lab has been structures in 5 main different activities, organized by each one of the artist-trainers, but it had also been punctuated by an intense dialogue about individual practices and collective work.
The exhibition is based on a collaborative relationship between all those involved: a community in transformation, which escapes the practices of identification and generates a dynamic relational map.
Ultimately the gallery space of Zaratan became a space for the participants to share with the public a glimpse of the work developed during the workshop, where the physical space is filled with interdisciplinary thoughts and transversal actions.
The lab has been made possible by the support of Câmara Municipal de Lisboa.

BIOGRAPHIES:
CAROLINA SERRANITO (Lisbon, 1997) studied Painting and Art Market and Collecting. She primarily works in painting, photography, installation, and participatory art. Her work avoids political connotations and instead focuses on themes of affection, obsession, voyeurism, and the construction of geographical identities. Her artistic journey includes several group exhibitions in Lisbon, Fátima, Coimbra, and Porto, a film festival dedicated to unhappy endings, and many pauses for restructuring the pictorial language she intends to adopt as her signature. Currently, she sees versatility and inconsistency between mediums as the best creative catapult at her disposal.
CLARA JOST studied film editing and directing at ESTC (Lisbon) and holds a master's degree in Audiovisual Arts from KASK (Ghent, Belgium), which she attended as a Calouste Gulbenkian fellow. Her works usually take their starting point in everyday elements, exploring their historical, emotional, or cultural layers. Her short films have been screened in festivals and shows around Europe and the Americas. In 2024, she released two short films and her first installation piece. She currently also works as a video editor and writes monthly chronicles in Au Hasard, Cinema, an ongoing project that explores the points of (dis)encounter between video art and cinema, hosted by the website À pala de Walsh.
ELISABETE GONÇALVES lives and works in Lisbon. She started her artistic practice recently after finishing the Painting course at Ar.Co. Her work, between painting, drawing, sculpture and installation, often stems from found objects and organisms, broken or in transition. The artist repurposes and recontextualizes them , providing them with a new life or new story, expanding and mending them.
FEDERICA ELENA is an Italian artist, researcher and cultural producer based in Portugal She is passionate about exploring the world through art, integrating various experiences to understand the human dimension. Currently, her focus lies in sustainable art practices, public engagement, and raising environmental awareness through creativity. She's particularly interested in connecting art and ecological systems to inspire a deeper bond between humans and nature.
INES OLIVEIRA (2005), a multidisciplinary artist, carries out her studies and works in Lisbon. She studied at the Escola Artística António Arroio, in the Artistic Production course, specializing in Plastic Realization of the Performance. She attends the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, in the branch of Set Design. In her artistic work, she seeks a connection between the visual arts and the plastic development of the performance. Her main themes of interest are memory and transformation. She has participated in exhibitions at the Church of Santiago in Palmela (2022), at the Thalia Theater (2022), at the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation (2023) and at the schools she attends.
JOANA CRUZ is an academic based in Porto, where she also explores her artistic side. Dance is her main form of expression, while painting and drawing are more recent creative passions. As an academic, she seeks to connect education, art, and politics, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and diverse perspectives, building bridges between places and different ways of seeing. With extensive experience and in constant learning, she actively seeks new opportunities for personal and professional transformation and growth.
JOÃO COIMBRA is a visual artist who graduated in Art and Design from the Escola Superior de Educação de Coimbra in 2024. Throughout his academic training, he developed a multidisciplinary artistic practice, exploring both fine arts and design. His creative approach is characterized by the blending of different techniques and methods, focusing on the creation of works that explore the human experience in its rawest forms. An artistic practice that reflects a continuity between the experimental and the functional, the digital and the analog.
LINA ALVES is an artist from Madeira island, Portugal, whose work is deeply inspired by the beauty and resilience of nature. Using vibrant colors and organic forms, she explores the connection between humans and the natural world. Her pieces often draw from coastal landscapes and the ocean, reflecting a sense of harmony and sustainability. Lina's art invites viewers to embrace simplicity, find joy in nature’s details, and reflect on our shared responsibility to protect the environment.
MALU MARTINS | (2004, São Luís - MA, Brazil) studies Multimedia Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon. She is an audiovisual technician trained by the António Arroio Artistic School. Residing in Odivelas, she develops her artistic practice in the metropolitan region of Lisbon, which serves as a great inspiration for her. Her projects use audiovisuals, photography, and drawing as forms of personal expression and critical reflection on the space she inhabits, also addressing issues such as memory, emotions, the immigrant experience, and individuality.
SARA ATROUNI (b. 1992, Beirut, Lebanon) is a contemporary abstract artist currently residing and working in Lisbon, Portugal. Her artistic practice is driven by a lifelong intrigue with color and texture, manifesting in captivating mixed-media abstractions. Atrouni’s vibrant canvases are distinguished by their richly layered surfaces, intricate details, and a bold exploration of chromatic relationships. Drawing inspiration from her background in therapy, she delves into the subjective nature of human experience.
