We are thrilled to present Thirteen, a pop-up exhbiition by Victoire Paillard, developed during her one-month residency at Zaratan.
Continuing her diaristic approach to painting, Paillard created a body of work inspired by the architecture and ornamental motifs of Lisbon. Engaging her surroundings as both observer and participant, she was captivated by the repetition and symbolism of balconies, windows, and particularly the intricate blue patterns of Portuguese azulejos. For Paillard, these architectural elements act as frames and thresholds through which she explores her central themes: womanhood, the gaze, and the intimacy of everyday moments.
Working on delicate, semi-translucent paper with a restrained palette evocative of traditional tilework, she layers found and imagined imagery—glimpsed figures, classical motifs, and fragmented patterns. The works, presented informally like pages from a travel journal, reflect how personal narratives unfold through the act of looking, recording, and reassembling. This is crystallized in the recurring presence of women behind windows, powerfully evoking the tension between watching and being watched.
The exhibition is complemented by an artist talk with Victoire Paillard on June 29th at 6:00 PM, and a limited-edition risograph poster, released on June 25th.

BIOGRAPHY:
VICTOIRE PAILLARD is a French artist currently based in London. She is entering her third year of a BA in Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, after completing a Foundation Year in Painting at Central Saint Martins. Born in Paris, she grew up between São Paulo, Milan, and Paris before moving to London to pursue her art education. her work explores themes of womanhood, the gaze, and the shifting power dynamics between subject and viewer. She is drawn to the intimacy of everyday moments, using painting as a diaristic tool to follow and reflect on her own life. Her practice is rooted in personal narrative, blurring the line between
observation and introspection. Material exploration plays a key role in her work, embracing texture, layering, and experimentation to mirror emotional and psychological depth. Her paintings often hold a quiet tension, inviting viewers to question their own gaze.
