Zaratan is pleased to present a new multimedia installation by Schwarzsonne, developed during his residency in Lisbon and created specifically for the gallery's Black Box space.
Perdido Nas Marés is a project born from the artist's personal experiences, research, and interviews. It unveils a recurring tragedy in his home country: school students driven to suicide by the immense pressure from their schools, teachers, parents, and classmates.
Each artwork within the project resonates with the others, forming an independent yet interconnected part of a larger whole. The project offers an alternative, poetic narrative centred around the tragic suicide of a young boy by a river in the artist's hometown. This river acts as a vital thread connecting the various artworks, symbolising the life within the local community and serving as a cross-reference among different facets of the project.
Deeply immersed in the local life of the region, the artist has created pseudo-reportage texts for a multilingual newspaper (Traditional Chinese/English/German/French/Japanese) published on a never-existing date (February 31st, 2024) within the project. These texts include critical suicide statistics specific to the area, reflecting the undeniable truth of misunderstandings between the different parties connected to the protagonist, as if trapped in a modern Tower of Babel.
The project aims to raise awareness about this pressing social issue and bring wider attention to the critical phenomena occurring annually along the river, amidst a context of local censorship and silencing.
A triptych of photographic images depicts the three key stages of the narrative surrounding the suicide, enhanced by a gloomy, grunge æsthetic achieved through a unique printing process.
The installation features a multi-screen video displaying footages and images of the river and its surroundings. These visual elements are accompanied by layered audio, incorporating recitations of victims’ names in the local dialect, poetry in different languages (Chinese/English/German/Portuguese), ambient sounds, and original music. All create a captivating, almost mystical, awe-inspiring, and spellbinding atmosphere within the video.

BIO: Schwarzsonne is a multi-disciplinary artist with an inspiring soul and a lifelong pursuit of endless creations, engages in a diverse range of artistic practices. These include mixed-media painting, photography, videography, poetry, text, and publication.
With a life constantly oscillating between illusions and truth, dreams and reality, brightness and darkness, greatness and humbleness, beauty and ugliness, in the name of art and poetry, he strives to distort and transform all encounters bestowed upon him by the Wheel of Fortune. Whether joyful or sorrowful, virtuous or faulty, he endeavours to extract and purify the quintessence of his experiences through the Alchemy of Images. This process involves blending hopes, prophecies, rhapsodies, lies, and Wahrheit — even uncovering the inner light and sacred cores within the darkest, most abject, and spleen objects. By breathing means of existence into them, he’s been fighting against hunger, poverty, coldness, death and all the adversaries and enemies of wonder in the life. In recent years, since uniting with his soulmate, wife, and creative partner, Coral, "Amour (Love)" has become the central theme of his artistic creation. Through love, he has infused his artistic concept and life's passion into an integrated, inseparable unity within his lifetime's artwork. He regards love and art as the identical and vital factors in his creative process.
