On May 23 to 26, the residency’s space will be open to the public for the Open Studio of Charlotte Parr-Burman who will share the process and works made during her one-month stay in Lisbon.
Charlotte works at the intersection of printmaking and analogue photography, transforming 35mm photographs into intricate woodcut prints. During her residency she has been capturing Lisbon’s urban landscapes with her camera, setting a 10 minute timer and walking through the streets with no real direction, she took one photo each time the alarm sounded. These moments became the ‘Waypoints’ along her routes through the city. This project investigates the patterns and symbols that draw her to certain scenes, the residency serving as an introspective period of her artistic practice as she attempts to deeper understand her own creative motivations. Using writing to record her directions and photograph subjects, drawing and mapping to plot key elements and locations; the work presented is an accumulation of documentation material and exploration of the photographic imagery.

BIO: CHARLOTTE PARR-BURMAN is a London based artist working at the intersection of printmaking and analogue photography. Using a self devised method she transfers her own 35mm photographs into multi-layered, intricate woodcut prints, balancing traditional techniques with a contemporary form of photographic reproduction. Her focus is on documenting traces in our environments that serve as evidence of the intertwining lives we lead within them. Capturing these moments consists of exploration on foot, searching for patterns and common links between different places.
