On November 25 and 26, between 4 pm and 8 pm, the residency’s space will be open to the public for the Open Studio of the artist Yasmine Lahjij, who will share the process and works made during her one-month stay in Lisbon.
Yasmine’s objects are imbued with ritual. The artist has been developing a series of handmade decorated amulets taking various shapes referring to the hand of Fatima (hamsa) as well as a series of textile work intermingling embroidery and appliqué technique.
Very much interested in the gestural aspects a human instills into these practices, the artist maintains subtle irregularities making each object singular without harming the balance of the decor or object.
Perceiving both mediums as vessels of cultural storytelling and containers of collective customs, she embraces an open and sincere attitude towards them, investigating them as carriers of emotive potential. These works are part of an ongoing project exploring the sacred and popular practice of the Ex-voto.

BIO: YASMINE LAHJIJ (1986) is a French-Moroccan artist based in Tangier and Saint-Rémy-de-Provance.
Her work is inspired by her background and heritage. Her drawings and ceramics are reflective of merging cultures. Concerned with the embodied body, its limits but also power relations, her practice explores notions of identity, vulnerability and fantasy. Sweeping each subject through two disparate cultures, her approach interlaces cultural references from Christian and Muslim traditions and infuses them in a research of dialogue and harmony.
She holds a BA in Fine Arts & Cinema and a Master in Fine Arts from Université Pantheon-Sorbonne, Paris. She also pursued a Master in Arts & Languages from EHESS, Paris.
Her work has been exhibited at Premio Vittorio Viviani, Nova Milanese; Prix de dessin Pierre David-Weill, Académie des Beaux-Arts - Institut de France, Paris; Youmein Festival, Tangier; 100 artisti, Palazzo Fani, Tuscania. She has been selected for the mentoring programme 'Room To Bloom', a feminist platform of emerging artists working in the field of ecological and postcolonial feminism. Her drawings have been published in 'ManbouZine', edited by Haven for Artists, Beyrut.
In 2023, she started to develop a series of workshops dedicated to youth and adults in Morocco, exploring the transmission of a memory of gesture and shape through pottery.
