PROJECT:

Waving Flags
Jillian Roberts' work is an art of circumnavigations, of passes and returns. Through video, sculpture and drawing the exhibition plays with different modes of storytelling toexplore concepts surrounding territory and our relationship to how land is divided across the world.

Her operative practice develops from a series of repetitive gestures and subjects. The images becomes almost obsessive, passing from one medium to another, from the vídeo to the drawing, and again from the paper to the three-dimensional space. This search for a reiteration is conceived as a strategy to force our senses – the looking and the hearing - to dig deeper into the apparent calm of the patterns and images.

During her residency, besid ea new series if walpaper and drawings, she produced 2 videos, one inspired by the Torre do Bugio in Lisbon’s Tagus River and the other by a World War II fort in the North Sea, weaves fact and fiction together to question ideas around ownership and national identity as seen through the eyes of an anonymous traveller.

To Jillian Roberts, nature is an inexhaustible repository of forgotten stories and unexpected coincidences: with her drawings and slow contemplative films, she transforms the landscape and its abandoned places into sublime panoramas of collective memory.
