3 Hand Stephen is inseparable from the singular figure of Stephen Cohen, a visual artist and multi-instrumentalist who presents the results of his artistic residency at Zaratan. On this occasion, Cohen proposes a participatory performance that invokes the idea of freedom and follows up on the questions that have guided his work: investigating the unfolding of revolutionary processes in Portugal and the consequences that resulted from them. Based on these premises, the artist uses music and performance to evoke a horizon of historical continuity that remains imperative to preserve and reinterpret today.
The performance of 3 Hand Stephen is built upon a repertoire of original songs where voice and percussion merge with a diverse and unconventional range of instruments. On stage, Stephen Cohen uses the electric guitar alongside a cigar box guitar and a one-of-a-kind miniature guitar. The show is further distinguished by its interactive nature, featuring moments of audience participation that integrate the public into the performance’s sonic and conceptual landscape.

BIOGRAPHY: 3 HAND STEPHEN is a US-based musician, composer, and visual artist, renowned for creating handcrafted instruments and musical sculptures that define his unique sound. Since the release of «The Tree People» in 1979—a work that garnered international recognition following recent reissues in Europe and Asia—Stephen has explored the boundaries between folk, experimentalism, and poetry. His career includes NPR-awarded albums and extensive exhibition activity in contemporary art galleries. In 2021, he published «Baggy Red Pants and Other Stories», consolidating his voice as an author, followed by the 2025 release of «THE TREE PEOPLE LIVE», a record that captures the eclectic and psychedelic essence of his live performances.
