Zaratan – Arte Contemporânea presents NON-LONELINESS, an Open Studio exhibition by artist-in-residence Nata Chebarkova.
NON-LONELINESS is a visual diary of adapting to an unfamiliar place. Developed during her residency at Zaratan in Lisbon, the project explores how a territory gradually becomes familiar through attention, movement, and everyday experience — and how one can feel connected even when living and travelling alone.
The studio becomes a labyrinth: the whole path is never visible at once, just as we cannot know the entire journey when entering a new place. As the viewer moves through it, they encounter fragments of Chebarkova’s experience in Lisbon — rubbings of local surfaces such as pavements, doors, and manholes; abstract paintings made on receipts and packaging using the colours of the city; fragments of inner dialogue, doubts, questions, and states of mind; and natural materials collected during her travels, including sand, charcoal, branches, and flowers.
The works are created and transformed throughout the residency, becoming a record of a gradual relationship with the place. Painting becomes both a way of documenting the territory and a practice of presence — a reason to slow down, observe, collect, and remain connected to the world around.
