Zaratan – Arte Contemporânea presents "Per via del mare", a new pop-up exhibition by Matteo Rosa installed in the gallery's corridor that explores the hazy intersection between perception and memory.
During his residency in Lisbon, the artist continued his ongoing series Seaside, drawing inspiration from the Tagus estuary, where the river meets the vastness of the Atlantic. These photographs evoke the "oceanic feeling"—a sense of boundlessness and unity with the universe, where distinctions between the self and the world dissolve.
The dreamlike aesthetics of the images, which may recall the painterly qualities of Pictorialism, were achieved through manual means during the act of shooting rather than through digital post-production alterations. The title, deliberately left in Italian, translates as both "by sea" and "because of the sea," preserving its openness and allowing for multiple interpretations.

BIO: MATTEO ROSA was born in Tione di Trento (IT) and is based in Malmö (SE). He holds a BA from Edinburgh College of Art (GB) and an MFA from Malmö Art Academy (SE). At the core of Rosa’s practice lies an interest in interconnectedness — the interplay between form and formlessness, transience and timelessness, imagination and awareness. He explores the potential of contemporary art to address neglected or overlooked aspects of the self, such as the primal experience of being in one’s own body, at a time of unprecedented exposure to external information. Nature and its contemplation are a recurrent theme, not in a romanticised sense, but rather as a means of pointing towards the viewer’s inner stillness. He operates across a range of media, including drawing, painting, photography, video, text and installation. Rosa’s work has been presented at numerous venues, including Skånes Konstförening, Malmö (SE); Krognoshuset, Lund (SE); Kramfors Konsthall, Kramfors (SE); The Boiler Room Gallery, Oslo (NO); Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (DK); City Art Centre, Edinburgh (GB); Viafarini, Milan (IT); and Galleria Civica, Trento (IT). He has previously held residencies at the High Coast of Sweden (SE); Arteles, Haukijärvi (FI); AIT – Arts Initiative Tokyo (JP); Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte, Poirino (IT); and Abisko National Park (SE). His work is represented in the collections of Malmö Art Museum (SE), Region Skåne (SE), Public Art Agency Sweden and KORO – Public Art Norway.
